Judge Clare E. McWilliams (Ret.) has established a reputation as one of the most effective jurists and pre-trial mediators during her tenure as a judge for over 18 years, in a legal career spanning over 35 years. While in the Jury Section of the Circuit Court of Cook County, she presided over 100+ jury trials, as well as conducted thousands of pre-trial mediations in a wide array of matters, including medical negligence actions, trucking and automobile cases, large scale construction and other catastrophic injury cases. Additionally, she presided over commercial calendar litigation including contract, insurance and legal malpractice cases. The Chicago Bar Association has said of her – Judge McWilliams “has presided over many complex cases and is highly regarded for her integrity, work ethic, excellent demeanor, and knowledge of the law.” The American Board of Trial Advocates Illinois named her “Judge of the year” in 2015 for her many years of service as an outstanding trial judge and her distinguished public service.
In 2013, Judge McWilliams became the Supervising Judge of the Cook County Asbestos Docket. In this capacity, she managed and organized a large volume (expedited) toxic tort calendar; presided over motions, pre-trial and settlement conferences; post judgment matters, and jury trials pertaining to mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and asbestos related talc litigation. Judge McWilliams was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Education as a Judicial College Faculty member educating fellow judges on civil litigation, effective pre-trial mediation, settlement and conferencing procedures.
